Germany’s largest financial group, Deutsche Bank (DB), is set to close around 100 branches nationwide as part of a broader push to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into its operations. As of the end of last year, Deutsche Bank and its subsidiary Postbank operated more than 750 branches and served approximately 19 million customers.
According to DPA, cited by AI Wire Media, the move reflects a strategic shift toward digitalization and automation.
Claudio de Sanctis, Member of the Management Board and Head of Private Banking, said that physical branches will continue to play a role, but their function will evolve. Currently, employees spend too much time on administrative tasks, he noted. With AI-driven automation, staff will be able to focus more on customer advisory services.
Personal consultations will remain essential for major financial decisions, such as buying a home or making large investments. While digitalization will lead to staff reductions, these are expected to occur mainly through natural attrition, without replacing employees who leave.
The bank is also developing an AI-powered digital assistant designed to help customers navigate and use its mobile banking app. Over the past 18 months, the number of mobile app users has grown by nearly 20%, highlighting the accelerating shift toward digital banking.
