In September 2025, Google’s Head of Android, Sameer Samat, said that progress on the new OS was planned for 2026. However, according to legal filings, the timeline appears to be more conservative.
The “fastest path” for the operating system would involve offering it to “commercially trusted testers” by the end of 2026, ahead of a full public release in 2028.
“Even once the new OS that will power Chromebooks becomes available, it will not be compatible with all existing devices. Google will not discontinue ChromeOS until at least 2033,” the court documents state.
In January, John Maletis, head of ChromeOS at Google, said the company will honor its commitment to provide 10 years of automatic updates for ChromeOS devices.
“As for migrating to the new platform, not all devices will be able to do so due to hardware limitations,” he added.
Google intends to phase out ChromeOS as soon as feasible.
“The planned timeline for the gradual retirement of this OS is 2034,” the lawyers said.
An earlier transition is not possible due to regulations in certain jurisdictions that impose different requirements regarding minimum device support lifecycles.
Conclusion: Based on court documents, Aluminium OS is a long-term project, with a full public release not expected before 2028 and a gradual phase-out of ChromeOS stretching into 2033–2034.
