What we know
According to The Guardian, searches like “what is a normal level for liver blood tests” returned generalized figures that could be incorrectly interpreted as universally “normal.” Google has now removed AI Overviews from search results for these types of queries.
Google said it does not comment on individual changes to search results but is continuously working on improvements. A company spokesperson noted that an internal team of physicians reviewed the queries highlighted by The Guardian and stated that “in many cases, the information was accurate and based on reliable sources.”
Vanessa Hebditch, Director of Communications and Policy at the British Liver Trust, welcomed Google’s decision to remove AI-generated answers from some medical queries. However, she stressed that this does not address the core issue. According to her, Google has simply “removed one result,” without fundamentally resolving the broader risks associated with AI-generated medical information.
Outlook:
This situation clearly highlights a growing tension in AI-powered search: general-purpose models struggle in domains where expert knowledge is critical. As oversight from medical organizations intensifies, AI systems used for health-related queries are likely to face stricter constraints, pushing companies toward deeper integration of domain-specific validation before automation in areas such as medicine can be trusted and deployed at scale.
