OpenAI’s stock-based compensation reached an average of $1.5 million per employee in 2025, according to The Wall Street Journal. Based on financial data presented to investors, OpenAI is paying its workforce more generously than any technology startup in modern history.
OpenAI set up an employee equity pool last fall equal to 10% of the company. At a valuation of $500 billion in October 2025, this pool would be worth around $50 billion, according to The Information, citing two people familiar with the plans.
