Microsoft and OpenAI made similar commitments in January. The backdrop includes growing political pressure: New York state senators have introduced a bill that would pause approvals for new data centers, while Senator Chris Van Hollen is pushing legislation requiring AI companies to shoulder grid upgrade costs themselves.
According to Politico, the Trump administration is also preparing a voluntary agreement that would obligate AI firms to absorb electricity price increases linked to their operations. The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory estimates that data centers could account for around 12% of total U.S. electricity consumption by 2028, up from 4.4% in 2024.
