Developers emphasized that the system includes built-in safeguards to prevent unauthorized actions.

“AI agents are everywhere — answering questions, summarizing documents, and helping with tasks. But today, neural networks hit a wall when they need to do something involving money,” wrote Eric Reppel and Josh Nickerson of the Coinbase Developer Platform.

Agentic Wallets is built on the x402 protocol, introduced in May. Coinbase is developing this standard together with partners to enable fully autonomous transactions.

The solution expands the capabilities of the previously launched AgentKit, which allowed wallets to be embedded during agent creation.

“Your assistant spotted a profitable opportunity at 3 a.m.? The tool will automatically reallocate funds — without additional confirmation — because you’ve already granted permissions and configured limits,” Reppel and Nickerson noted.

Security Mechanisms

At launch, Agentic Wallets will operate on Base, Coinbase’s supported Layer-2 network, with gasless transactions enabled.

The wallets include a command-line interface, allowing users to monitor agent status, fund balances, and activate new features.

Security is handled through a system called Smart Security Guardrails, which incorporates spending limits, session duration controls, and other oversight mechanisms.

Additionally, enclave isolation technology ensures that private keys remain within Coinbase’s secure infrastructure and are never exposed to prompts or large language models.

“We are moving from agents that advise to agents that act. From assistants that suggest to helpers that execute. From tools requiring constant human supervision to autonomous systems operating independently within trusted constraints,” Reppel and Nickerson stated.

Since its launch, the x402 protocol has processed more than 50 million transactions. In December, Coinbase introduced an updated version with expanded support for traditional payment rails.
