According to Musk, OpenAI received $65.5–109.4 million from him when he was one of the project’s founders in 2015. His investments related to Microsoft amounted to $13.3–25.1 million, against the backdrop of the ongoing legal proceedings involving the corporation.
OpenAI called the lawsuit “baseless” and described it as part of a campaign of “harassment” by its former co-founder.
Musk, who now owns the rival AI venture xAI, left OpenAI in 2018. He claims the company violated its original mission after transforming into a commercial entity.
The entrepreneur stated that his contributions accounted for roughly 60% of OpenAI’s seed funding round. That financing helped the startup hire key personnel and secure critical early contracts.
The alleged damages were calculated by Musk’s financial adviser, C. Paul Vazzan.
A jury trial is scheduled for April. OpenAI and Microsoft have already asked the court to shield jurors from what they called Musk’s “invented, unverifiable, and implausible” claims. The companies have also challenged Musk’s damage estimates, questioning the credibility of his expert analysis
