OpenAI previously announced plans to allow ChatGPT access to some of these types of content for adults; age verification is seen as a step toward that goal. The move also follows cases in which teenagers developed dangerous dependencies on AI chatbots, in some instances with fatal consequences.

Adults who are incorrectly classified as minors can verify their age via a selfie using the Persona service. Parents will receive additional control options, such as setting quiet hours or receiving notifications when signs of acute distress are detected. In the EU, the feature is expected to roll out in the coming weeks to comply with regional requirements.

This move shows that OpenAI is trying to make ChatGPT safer for children and teenagers without limiting adult users. The company is increasingly relying on behavior analysis, not just declared age, to reduce risks in advance.
