“Our subscriptions were not designed with third-party tool usage in mind. Computational power is a resource we manage carefully, and we prioritize our customers using our products and APIs,” commented Claude Code director Boris Cherny.
Reaction from developers and technical limitations
OpenClaw creator Peter Steinberger stated that, together with project board member Dave Morin, he attempted to persuade Anthropic’s leadership. However, they only managed to delay the new rules for one week.
“It’s funny how the timing works out: first, they copy some popular features into their closed platform, and then they close access to open source,” emphasized the entrepreneur.
In response, Cherny stated that the startup team supports open source but that the decision was made due to technical limitations.
“Our systems are carefully optimized for one specific type of load. We continue optimizing to serve as many users as possible with the smartest models,” he noted.
The developer reminded customers that those who disagree with the changes can cancel their subscription and receive a full refund.
